Experience
Building systems, developing teams, and solving problems.
My work spans hands-on software engineering, architecture, cloud-native infrastructure, and technical leadership. I’ve built business-critical platforms and connected-device products, modernized established systems, and developed multidisciplinary engineering teams. My experience includes distributed systems and real-time communications. Agentic engineering is a current focus: creating structured workflows that connect agents, engineering tools, and human oversight.
Product Engineering & Technical Direction
Currently focused on architecture and hands-on development, working toward the launch of additional software products.
This is a project-based engagement while I explore my next long-term opportunity.
Software Architecture & Engineering Leadership
I combined architecture and hands-on implementation with responsibility for multidisciplinary teams, technical direction, engineering processes, and infrastructure costs.
Architecture & Product Engineering
We modernized legacy Java applications running on virtual machines toward containerized, cloud-native services, moved the frontend from Grails and Angular toward React, and introduced SSO/OIDC authentication across application services.
I developed analytics capabilities around TimescaleDB and Grafana. We expanded observability with Loki, Prometheus, and Tempo, integrating those capabilities with application authentication. I also developed a data service abstraction that separated consumers from the storage implementation, providing a path from persistent disks toward more flexible cloud storage.
For a connected-device hardware platform, my team delivered a complete software stack spanning firmware, Linux kernel drivers, device applications, client software, backend services, and observability. I provided technical direction and made substantial personal architecture and code contributions.
On another device initiative, I initially built the entire backend and ultimately implemented most of it. This included gRPC-based device control and secure, high-throughput ingestion over TLS sockets with concurrency safeguards. I also worked on the device client’s specifications and architecture.
For a separate telemetry product, I developed the complete server-side implementation in collaboration with another team. MQTT and RabbitMQ supported device-data ingestion and processing; middleware let customers integrate the data into their own workflows or use our analytics platform.
AI-Assisted Development & Agentic Workflows
I developed agentic workflows for implementation, code review, and planning using defined agent responsibilities, structured Markdown instructions, and deterministic controls. These constrained agents to produce focused, maintainable changes that people could review.
Development and review workflows proved effective, producing more consistent and reviewable results. Planning workflows were still being refined. I began integrating GitLab through MCP to connect agents with existing engineering tools, although validation and refinement were incomplete.
We also explored architectural concepts for AI-enabled products. My current interest builds on this work: combining autonomous capabilities with explicit constraints, observability, and human oversight.
Engineering Teams & Processes
I managed multidisciplinary teams across embedded software, application development, QA, and cloud operations, and provided technical direction to international engineers outside my formal reporting structure. We expanded from a US-based team into a globally distributed organization, improving collaboration between development, operations, and customer support.
I helped establish a formal software development lifecycle, stronger QA and testing practices, and more consistent planning and delivery workflows. We advanced infrastructure as code, containerization, security practices, and root-cause analysis. I mentored interns and junior engineers as they developed technical judgment, confidence, and greater ownership.
Business & Operational Impact
We substantially reduced infrastructure spending through architectural improvements, optimization, and ongoing cost management. I established practices that supported sustained efficiency as the platform grew, rather than treating savings as a one-time exercise.
Our analytics capabilities enabled higher-value hosted services and new commercial opportunities. I worked with business development on SaaS hosting pricing models and managed cloud-provider and technology-partner relationships to improve access to resources, support, and operational services.
Platform Engineering & Executive Leadership
I built core business software and an engineering organization while helping shape the technical direction of a growing telecommunications business. My work combined personal software development with architecture, infrastructure, and leadership.
Core Business Platform
I personally developed a telecommunications rating and billing platform covering call detail records, service plans, aggregation, prorating, invoicing, payment processing, customer management, and CRM. It supported tokenized credit card payments and ACH processing, became central to daily operations, and remains in use.
I also developed zero-touch provisioning for phones from multiple manufacturers, connecting first-use configuration with equipment ordering and fulfillment. I built provisioning integrations for multiple Class 4 and Class 5 telecommunications switching platforms.
I developed automated customer migrations between switch clusters, with scheduled blue/green upgrades and rollback capabilities. We could schedule migrations weeks ahead and move individual customers between platform versions, managing upgrades as controlled deployments rather than large, disruptive events.
Real-Time Systems & Reliability
We architected and operated real-time communications systems with four-nines availability objectives. I developed automated testing and live operational monitoring using Elixir and portions of a custom SIP implementation, helping identify problems in switching infrastructure before they became larger operational issues.
I built monitoring and troubleshooting integrations, worked on carrier interoperability and call routing, and addressed limitations in vendor platforms. When existing vendors could not deliver needed capabilities quickly enough, we implemented them ourselves, including MMS functionality.
I was responsible for architecture, budgets, and vendor relationships across colocation facilities, dedicated systems, and cloud services. We evolved through platform migrations and greater automation. Reliable operation depended on disciplined deployments, effective monitoring, predictable testing, and practical recovery procedures as well as infrastructure.
Engineering Organization & Leadership
I built the engineering team from the ground up, often hiring for potential rather than extensive professional experience. Mentoring helped engineers develop technical skills, architectural understanding, and the confidence to take on increasingly complex responsibilities.
As the organization grew, I managed local, remote, nearshore, and offshore teams. We established clearer development workflows, improved testing, and used metrics to understand quality, progress, and delivery. These practices made expectations clearer and problems easier to identify.
My responsibilities included technical strategy and the technology supporting business operations. Working with production, support, and other functions kept technical decisions connected to operational realities and business needs. We also explored potential applications for machine learning and AI.
Software Engineering & Executive Leadership
During Shadow’s primary technology-services period, I developed software, designed infrastructure, and worked directly with customers. Our work covered web development, custom business software, networking, hosting, and our own colocation infrastructure. My responsibilities also included troubleshooting, sales, support, operations, and budgets.
The business later evolved into a vehicle for independent product development and technical experimentation. These subsequent projects are separate from the original operating period above. I’ve explored concepts involving healthcare AI, mobile development, and consumer software; some became working implementations without becoming commercial products.
One ongoing project is Subjective Wine, exploring personalized wine recommendations through AI, data modeling, and user preferences. It provides practical experience with application architecture and mobile development. Across these projects, evaluating constraints and knowing when to change direction have mattered as much as building the software.
Earlier Technical Experience
My earlier work provided a hands-on foundation in software development, business applications, systems administration, networking, infrastructure, and technical troubleshooting.
